Dear Falcon Faithful,
HoHoHo! Merry Christmas! Just like the late, great Burl Ives sang, "This is the best time of the year." (besides March Madness of course). Some of my best memories growing up are the traditions that my family and I have surrounding Christmas. I have tried to incorporate those traditions to my home in Bowling Green.
Feel free to incorporate any of these holiday traditions into your Christmas! (None have been trademarked yet)
#1: No yard is complete without an inflatable holiday decoration. Yes, I said inflatable! It is a family tradition to have the largest inflatable in the neighborhood. I grew up with a 20 foot tall inflatable Santa Claus in my backyard and I have continued that tradition with my own 15 foot tall inflatable Frosty the Snowman in my yard. It left everyone in the office speechless when they saw him! Even when I go recruiting, I will pull off the side of the road or slow down to enjoy seeing a great inflatable holiday display.
#2: Sometimes Santa needs some help in delivering gifts so he gets it from some very important people. Since I grew up in Kentucky, I always had gifts under the tree from Santa Claus as well as Rick Pitino, Tubby Smith, and other Kentucky great basketball players like Jamal Mashburn, Richie Farmer and my all time favorite Kenny "Sky" Walker! So now, I have gifts under my tree from Freddy and Frieda Falcon, the sharp shooting guard Stephan Curry (from my alma mater at Davidson College) and Billy Gillespie (UK's men's basketball coach).
#3 Last but not least, our annual Christmas Eve dinner is none other than KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken)! It is the best and we watch National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Cutting down the Christmas tree and the scene with the squirrel coming out of the tree inside the house are absolute classic scenes for any movie lover!
It is always amazing to me how fast the non-conference schedule goes and it is almost the start of the MAC season! We will be ready for it and it will be like Christmas morning, when the ball goes up in the air for the opening tip for that first MAC game!

Happy Holidays from Women's Basketball!!
Hello Falcon Fans!
I apologize for the delay in recent postings, but sometimes you get so wrapped up in the season...the next scout, the travel, practices...that you tend to forget that there actually is life outside of basketball! :)
I hope all of you are enjoying the holiday season...and enjoying the 7 game winning streak that we are on! After a rough start to the season, our young team is growing up and coming together. We had a long 7 day road trip over Thanksgiving break (lovingly nicknamed the Griswold Family Thanksgiving Bus Trip!!). On that trip there was some good team bonding and 3 road wins. We are now in the midst of a 4-game homestand. We just defeated a very good St. Bonaventure team on Sunday. This Sunday, we take on the Hartford Hawks. They are known as one of the best mid-major teams on the east coast, so it should be a good game and a tough matchup for us! I hope everyone can get away from the chaos of last minute Christmas shopping and head over to Anderson for the game at 2 pm on Sunday!
I was going to ask a player to do this week's blog, but they are all brain-fried from exams, so I thought I would give them a break from any additional "homework" these days! Christmas break is a great time of year for our team. First, the team gets a few days off to spend with their families...a much needed break for players and staff alike. When we return on the night of the 26th to practice, it starts three weeks where the players have nothing to do but play basketball and hang out with each other. It's a good time to come together and continue to get better before heading into MAC play in January.
When we return, we also have our annual Team Christmas Party!! :) This is a much anticipated event for the team. First, we start by drawing Secret Santa names in early December. You are supposed to leave little gifts and notes for your secret santa throughout the month. Some are definitely better than others at this. For example, my lovely secret santa has left me cute coffee mugs with hot chocolate, candy, gum, etc. Coach Roos's secret santa however, left her a handful of M&M's on her desk. Kelly's secret santa dumped a whole bucket of double bubble gum in her locker. I actually thought that was quite funny. :) Anyway, so the party is always hosted by some of our most favorite people, Diane Tymiak and Eileen Weithman. They graciously open up their home and basement for our gathering. We have a good meal...and then the games begin. We start by opening our secret santa gifts to each other. As many of you know, our team and coaching staff are ultra-competitive, so no doubt the Christmas games get pretty intense. We start with the numbers game where the highest number picks a gift out of the middle first. Then the next person can either steal that gift or take a chance and open another one. And so on and so on. The good gifts (sweatshirts, shorts, under armor shirts) get stolen most often. Then we play the dice game...this is when it helps to be a post player with long arms and dirty elbows!! It begins with everyone in a big circle. There is a pile of gifts in the middle. There are 6 sets of dice that get passed around the circle for a set amount of time. Every time you roll a double, you get to grab a gift out of the middle and roll again. Then you pass the dice. When the gifts run out, you can steal from people until time runs out. You gotta watch out for Coach Miller in this game, because he likes to hide his gifts so people can't steal them! This game gets pretty physical! :) It's funny because when the game ends and everyone opens the loot that they ended up with...well, let's just say that there are some good gifts and some not so good gifts that people were fighting over!! It's pretty entertaining. Then it ends with the coaching staff giving a special gift to the team. Needless to say, it's a fun night away from basketball for the team.
I will have one of the players post about the party before the new year, so everyone can hear how it goes!!
I wish everyone a safe and happy Holiday Season!! Take a break and come to Anderson for our game on Sunday at 2 pm and then the men play at Anderson on Monday at 7 pm. Enjoy two nights of BG basketball before the holiday!!

Meet the Newcomers Part 5: Victoria McGowan
Hi, I am one of the three freshman on the team. I am from Detroit, Michigan and I attended Inkster High School.
So far Bowling Green has been a great experience for me. I can't picture myself anywhere else. The coaches are very helpful and exciting to be around. Most importantly, my teammates are always so supportive and everyone gets along well.
Last Friday we flew to Philadelphia to play Temple. I was pretty nervous because it was my first time on a plane. It was not a fun flight for my first experience of being on a plane...lol but, I made it. Temple was a challenge and even though we lost it was taken as a learning experience.

So far Bowling Green has been a great experience for me. I can't picture myself anywhere else. The coaches are very helpful and exciting to be around. Most importantly, my teammates are always so supportive and everyone gets along well.

Meet the Newcomers Part 4: Jess Slagle
Hola Falcon Fans!
I am yet another one of the three freshman this year. I come to you from Lehman Catholic High School in Sidney, Ohio.
Wow, what a eye-opening experience these first two exhibition games have been! Despite actually being a part of the team since a couple months ago, there's nothing like putting on your jersey for the first time and realizing just how far you've come already. As for running out into Anderson Arena for the first time, I have no words to describe it. Warming up, I couldn't help but glance over at the baseline bleachers where I used to reside during games last year and smile.
Then again, that was just warmups! The fan support during and after each game reminded me of one of the reasons I chose Bowling Green. Our fan support is second to none. Coach Miller has always told us that it is difficult for other teams to come into Anderson and play, and now I can see why! It is your support that keeps this program on its path to success year after year.
Coming up this Friday is our first season game against Temple, and it can't come fast enough. We have been working hard and preparing all week for a tough, athletic Temple team, and can't wait for the challenge!

Meet the Newcomers Part 3: Tamika Nurse
Hey Falcon Faithful,
Let's all say hello to winter! To most, the sight of flurries is depressing. It means it's time to pull out the mittens, scarves, and winter caps. Surprisingly, I find the freezing wind slapping me in the face refreshing; it means I'm back near home. I haven't had a real winter in years.
I am a redshirt junior transfer from the University of Oregon. I was grew up in Hamilton, Ontario before spending three years playing for the Ducks. After three winters of constant rain I welcome the cold with open arms. I'd rather be cold than wet anyday!
I chose to finish my career at BG largely because of the great relationship I built with the coaching staff during my initial recruiting process in high school. They were a group of individuals who seemed to really enjoy their job and working with each other. It was their dedication to excellence that ensured me this was a place I could continue to grow as both a student and an athlete. The family-like atmosphere made me feel comfortable. Lastly, I wanted to win. I've spent three years sitting in front of a TV in March watching other teams play for an NCAA title. BG offered me the opportunity to participate in that tourney.
Well things have gone well thus far. Practice is really intense. It's the loudest practice facility I've ever been in. It's a testiment to how supportive we are of each other. I am learning the plays and how to run a new set of systems. I have to say coach Miller might need to have his own stand-up comedy show. His practice comments can be quite comical. You get the point though! All in all things are going really well. It's a great time to be a Falcon!

Meet the Newcomers Part 2: Maribeth Giese
Hey Falcon Fans!
I am one of the three freshmen on the team this year. I am from Mother of Mercy High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.
I am so excited about this season! I can’t wait for the regular season to start and have the opportunity to compete in the MAC. The first few weeks of practice have been quite a challenge, but the team is coming together nicely. We’ve all had our good and bad days, and we’re always there to support each other along the way.
My decision to join the Bowling Green family is one of the best choices I’ve ever had to make. My teammates, coaches, trainers and managers have all been extremely helpful in my transition from being a high school student athlete to a college basketball player. It’s been great getting to know some of the fans and boosters, and I can’t wait to play in Anderson Arena with the amazing support of the community.
Our first game is this coming Friday, and we are getting ready to face Temple for our season opener. Go Falcons!!

Meet the Newcomers Part 1: Maggie Hennegan

Welcome to the start of the 2008-09 Women's Basketball season! I will try to keep our blog updated from the road and on a weekly basis, so you know what's going on with your Falcons. This week I thought I would introduce you to our five newest Falcons. Everyday this week you will be hearing from one of our new players. Today meet Maggie Hennegan...

Hey BG Fans!
I am one of the new additions to our team this year. I am a red-shirt sophomore from Cincinnati. It’s great to be back in Ohio and here at Bowling Green. I transferred to our team from Saint Louis University where I played for two years.
Coming to Bowling Green was an easy choice because of how comfortable I felt with the team and coaching staff in just a short time. I also came because I want to help keep the winning tradition alive. It’s special being a part of a team and program like ours. Another key reason is the community support. It’s exciting to hear about the home court advantage we had in the WNIT game last year. The atmosphere around women’s basketball at BG is so positive and intense!
The first few weeks of practice have been challenging and exciting. I’ve been playing basketball long enough that I feel like I can pick up on the new drills and terminology pretty quickly. Although I must admit that “playing cat and mouse” and “sitting in the lap” are both new for me. Executing our offense and playing defense against our very athletic guys practice squad prepares us for any opponent. Practices have also helped us to come together as a team. If one of us makes a great play we’re right there to cheer, hive five and even sometimes give a chest bump. When one of us isn’t playing well we are learning how to bring the best out of each other…before the Coaches have to try(: I’m learning something new about each of my teammates styles of play with every practice. With each practice we are coming together a little bit more. We’re getting the car ready to Drive For Five!
